Abstract

Ministerial formation in Africa goes beyond just passing on theological knowledge. It is about shaping ministers whose character, skills, accountability, and approach to Scripture are all aligned under God’s authority. This article takes a closer look at 2 Timothy 2:15, focusing on how the minister is described as a workman who should be “approved unto God.” The study uses a Scripture-Governed research approach, diving into historical-grammatical exegesis, lexical analysis, contextual analysis, theological analysis, and a review of related literature. It makes the case that the competence of a minister, as outlined in 2 Timothy 2:15, is not just about academic success or technical abilities; it is a calling from God that involves diligence, proven character, skilled workmanship, a lack of shame, and a faithful handling of the truth. Building on the Scripture-Governed Ministerial Diligence Framework from the previous study, this article expands on the idea of the “approved workman” as a valuable model for ministerial training in Africa. The findings suggest that approval isn’t merely a certificate or a public image; it is a theological mindset where ministerial competence is constantly assessed in God’s eyes. The article recommends that African ministerial education should weave together biblical exegesis, spiritual growth, practical ministry, ethical accountability, supervised practice, and a commitment to lifelong learning. In conclusion, effective ministry is best seen as a disciplined stewardship of both Scripture and one’s vocation before God.
